Casimir Liberski ReTRio
2 February 2025 E 20:00
Born in 1988 in Brussels, Casimir Liberski is a pianist, composer and improviser who made his mark in NYC for about a decade after
graduating from the Berklee College of Music. He decided to move back to Belgium in 2018. An insatiable jack-of-all-trades and bulimic heir to his "gods" Monk, Coltrane, Miles Davis, among the many deities of the colossal repertoire of baroque, classical, modern, jazz, and contemporary music, Casimir is also an obsessive tweaker of vintage analog synthesizers. "A lifetime will not be enough to quench my thirst for music," he says with a smile.

Through her compositions, Laurence Cousseau offers a perspective on a world situated between the real and the dreamlike. This results in a mix of modesty and irony, meditative trances, and mysterious dissipations. Her work incorporates jazz energy (Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus), colors drawn from the modern classical repertoire, as well as a contemporary jazz language.

Barbastelle is a musical hybrid combining the sounds of strings and woodwinds with those of impressionist drums, and blending written chamber jazz with the unexpectedness of episodes composed in the moment. It communicates through songs made up of chirps. Its sounds are formed by a repetition of clearly discernible melodic sequences. Its song varies according to the season, but everyone can understand it.

Jeroen Van Herzeele - saxophone
Casimir Liberski - piano
Emanuel Van Mieghem - double bass
Lionel Beuvens - drums

It is impossible to know what Dolphy might have achieved had he lived beyond 36 years, but what he left behind in such a short time spans multiple lifetimes of monumental creativity.

Jun is a singer with a background in jazz and pop music, but she’s always been driven to break down boundaries. From a young age, she trained in the traditional Chinese zither, the Guzheng. As she began incorporating the Guzheng into her music, her delicate melodies and poetic lyrics fused seamlessly with the instrument’s rich, resonant tones. Through experimental improvisation and the integration of jazz and electronic elements, Jun creates an avant-garde sound that effortlessly bridges East and West, tradition and innovation.
